Who is Json? Maybe you've heard him on one of Flame's 4 albums. Maybe you've heard him on 13 letters or any of the other Reach Records projects. You may have picked up his debut album The Seasoning, but the question stands, who is Json really?

Jason Json' Watson was born and raised on the northside of St. Louis, MO. One of the most impacting events in his young life was the loss of his father which left his mother to raise him alone. Though Json's mother loved him deeply her addiction to drugs affected their relationship and led Json to look for guidance in the streets. Throughout his adolescence and teenage years Json was exposed to the drugs and violence that are so common to many urban areas. He also indulged in and abused a lot of these drugs including, heroin, marijuana, and alcohol. At 15 Jason experienced the loss of his best friend Gaylon, and the pain of this event sent his life into a downward spiral. By the age of 16 Jason had been kicked out of school, served jail time, and become a member of a local gang. Being fully immersed in this lifestyle he couldn't imagine life no other way. At 18 Jason caught a drug case that left him incarcerated for several months and this is when God began to deal with his heart.

Once Jason was released he did not immediately relinquish his old activities, but he understood that God was real and knew there was more in life than what he had been used to. Jason continued to experience everything that comes with a life that isn't completely surrendered to Christ. At 19 he met LaWanda Childress. Through this relationship Jason would hear God's call and then answer it. Neither Jason nor LaWanda knew at the time that this was God's providence because later they would both surrender their lives to Christ and join in Holy Matrimony.

Json has been saved for 5 years now. He now uses his many talents and gifts to exhaust himself in the things of God. Along with being a husband, father, minister, & teacher Json is also a Gospel Rapper. In being a gospel rapper Json uses the art form of rap set to a beat to relay the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This gift of rap has been a lifelong passion of Jason's. And just as he put all of himself in everything he did in the world Json does that now also. And whether that's teaching, preaching, evangelizing or rapping it's all done to the Glory of God.

I've been playing it since it dropped in 2006. It was re-released on Emtro Gospel in 08 and we've been waiting for something new since. The time has finally come! They're back with a new CD "Time To Get Up" in May 2012. I got my hands on the first single "Could Have Been Me" and it's in rotation now on NBG Radio. Sounds like a Cedric Thompson production. Three-time Gospel Music Academy Award winner, songwriter, vocalist and producer, Isaac D. Simpson is an internationally known artist who is the visionary behind Divine Providence, also known as DP.

Simpson, who comes from a long generation of singers, songwriters and entertainers, began honing his skills at an early age-directing citywide choirs. By the time he was twenty-six he had conducted workshops throughout the U.S., the Caribbean Islands, Great Britain and Europe.

Where Are They Now: Donald Malloy

A lot of what we feature on NBG caters to a more urban crowd or the youngins', but every now and then it's good to take a look back at some of the pioneers. I was listening to John Kee's Lilly of The Valley CD and one of my favorite songs Cast Your Cares came on featuring Donald Malloy. I thought to myself, wonder where he is. Well. I didn't have to wonder long or look far... was surfing through CDBaby.com and came across a new project. Finally Home. The samples sound great. Isaiah Thomas and Elements of Praise provide background vocals and Malloy is in great voice. Prayer Will Fix It is in rotation on NBG Radio.

Donald Malloy has recorded five solo projects, the last, with Savoy Records, titled, "Jesus Reigns," provided a platform for Malloy to tour the country to perform and lecture at events such as the Gospel Announcer's Guild Conferences, the RCA Dome in Indianapolis, IN for the 30th Annual Indiana Black Expo, and numerous appearance on local, regional and national television tapings including the 2000 GMWA Excellence Awards and the Bobby Jones Gospel Explosion in August of 2000.

The new issue is almost here. New Year. Same Song? - Hopefully Not! Featuring Jor'Dan Armstrong, Myron Butler, High Society Collective, Theory Hazit, Fondrea Lewis, KJ Scriven, Sonday and Brian Courtney Wilson.

a couple of things:

1. the design revolves around Jor'Dan Armstrong. His album Stronger was supposed to drop on 01/24. The CD has been pushed back and a mix tape called Jesus, Fashion and Beatz will be available for FREE download instead. The single Tropicana will be added to NBG Radio.

2. I didn't have high expectations for Myron Butler's release Worship. I saw the word "worship" and read that this would be his first CD without Levi and was immediately... not interested. Sorry. I'm just being honest. I couldn't do another album of slow singin' and flower bringin' (i.e. Revealed) and "worship our (imagine me doing the quote sign with my fingers lol) way". Boy was I wrong! Got the CD early (thanks Cam Hilson at EMI) and I'm feelin it. Favorites include Bless The Lord, Dwell Here, I Honor You As My King, Holy One. The project features guest appearances from Blanche McAllister and newly signed EMI Gospel artist Tasha Cobbs. A great mix of music. Pick it up this Tuesday.

3. NBG Radio will be loaded with new music from Jor'Dan Armstrong, Myron Butler, Zebulon Ellis, James Fortune, Stephen Hurd, LeJuene Thompson, John P. Kee & New Life, Trip Lee and so many others.

4. Did a lil "twit stalkin" #stellarawards during Stellar Weekend and tried to put together a Stellar Awards feature recappin' everything that happened. Borrowed (read: stole) a couple of twitpics n stuff.. Can't wait to see the show. Definitely looking forward to the John P. Kee tribute. #keestansunite

About The Misfit Tour

In partnership with Pastor Chris Durso, author of the Zondervan bestseller MISFIT: Dealing With Our God-given Discomfort, Xist Music (Xist) and The UpLift! Left work and hopped on the Metro and headed into DC. I probably should back up a bit tho... When I finally decided that I was going.. I reached out to one of my media contacts because I read on twitter that there were no tickets available to attend the show. In 12 years of doing this site, I've never been one to try to get into an event using "media credentials". That's just not me. I'm not that important and I'm not even trying to have somebody go ... NuthinButGospel? What's that? You won't shade me like that! lol Anyway, shout out to Judi Durand for making it possible for me to get in.

I get to Howard and see a grip of people out in front of Cramton Auditorium. I go up to the door where there were people with passes around their necks. I speak to one young lady who appeared to have a list of the names of people that should be allowed in to the venue. Now I was told my name (plus one) would be on the list. It wasn't. So before she got the chance to side-eye me, I whipped out my phone and pulled up my email. (Thank you Jesus for the Android *quickens*) It was all good.

Get into the venue and get shuffled to side with other members of the "press". We were then escorted to our seats. Front and center. Second row, end seat on the left. Waited about 15-20 more minutes and the show started. Can I say...not sure where the whole "no more tickets left" thing came from... because there were a decent amount of seats in the back of the auditorium, but the crowd that was there was definitely live and the energy in the room was great!

The show/service starts: Greetings from Howard's staff members and performances from two opening acts: MPH (Man Praising Hard) and Oppose. <-- I hope that's right. I believe it is.

Sean Simmonds was the first one up. Performed I Need You, Gravity and a new single that hit the net not too long ago Fireproof (currently in rotation on NBG Radio). I was used to Sean the "singer", but hearing him bounce between rhyming and singing wasn't bad at all. He did his thing. His new record "The Genesis" will be out in 2012.

The Ambassador hit the stage next. Opened with the banger Gimme Dat from The Chop Chop CD and then blazed through his set performing (and ministering in between songs) I Am, Bring Em Out, Pop Pop Pop & Up Down.

In between each set, a beautiful young lady named Oraia came out and did spoken word segments. I had never heard of her prior to this concert, but let me just say... she was INCREDIBLE. For more about her ministry, visit her website here.

Da Truth! hit the stage next performing music from The Whole Truth. He opened with God is Good, Impossible and then went into Without God. Now while he was setting the song up...a big smile came over my face because I knew what was about to happen. This is my favorite song from the CD... and when I heard the snare intro, I was up on my feet. This song was the highlight of the night for me! Truth KILLED it! and HEAR ME... the presence of God came in the room. I even thought to myself...if this were a choir concert, the war cry would have broken out right about here. We were IN!

Truth closed out with Can't Believe (I kinda skipped by this one on the CD, but after hearing it live and reflecting back to this concert [the worship was still in the atmosphere through this song], I've been playing it a lot more) and then it was time for Mali Music to hit the stage.

They saved the singer for last. Mali has a large fan base here in DC. People started rushing the stage waiting for him to come out. I'm looking at my watch because it's almost 10 and I need to get back across the country (I live 45 mins outside of DC). I sat through Mali's first song Job Experience. He was great. He was setting up another new single Walk on Water and sharing that his new CD "This is Mali" would be out in January when I decided it was time for me to bounce. (edit - so I forgot that he actually opened with Give Me - his collaboration w/Kirk Franklin from the Hello Fear CD and then went into JE)

I missed the rest of his set and the conclusion of the concert boys and girls. lol Let me just say... I have a greater appreciation for Holy Hip Hop (or Christian Rap - whichever you prefer) artists after this concert. It was done in excellence. All of the artists came on stage (with a DJ, drummer and keyboard player as the house band) and held their own! I'm even more proud of The Ambassador and Da Truth for bouncing back from their situations with even greater anointings than they had prior to what they went through. Restoration is a WONDERFUL thing! They were great musically, but the way they poured from their hearts in between each song made the night even more memorable.

Shout out to Xist Music (whattup T. Black?!) and all involved for putting together such a quality event. I was told the tour may go back out in 2012. If it hits your city, GO!

oh, if you can... pick up the Misfit book. I have my copy but haven't had chance to go through it.

Oscar Williams & The Band of Life - All To Thee featuring Amber Bullock

Oscar Williams Jr. is a classically trained pianist with a degree from the University of MO - St. Louis and obtaining his Masters in Music from Southern Methodist University.

His formal training began at the age of 8. He is a well accomplished and decorated pianist with styles ranging from Classical music, Jazz, Gospel, Ragtime and Broadway. He holds many prestigious awards and honors and has performed before vast audiences including Pope John Paul II, performances at the White House and continuous demand performances in Europe. He has toured extensively throughout Jamaica, Switzerland, Italy, Germany, France and Austria performing his own music and also serving as vocal coach and contractor for European pop singer Elisa. He has shared the stage with such artist as; Dionne Warwick, Lionel Richie, Lauren Hill, Kirk Franklin, Richard Smallwood, Clifton Davis and many more.

Oscar Williams was selected as 1 of 10 bands from around the country to serve in a program called Rhythm Road, a program sponsored by the US States Department and Jazz at Lincoln Center. This program is designed to send the best musicians over as representatives of American-based music, to teach, perform and promote their genre while also helping US relationships with these countries. This tour took him to Cyprus, Lebanon, Poland and Romania performing for the US Embassies and the Ambassadors and also master classes and ecumenical services. Oscar's concert series also included performances at the National Geographic Center in Washington, DC and the Dizzy Club in NYC.

Oscar is a national recording artist, composer, producer and clinician, having released his debut CD "Unstoppable" in September of '05 nationwide on RyKo/Warner/Aleho Records. This debut smash spent time on the Top 40 Gospel Billboard Charts and was very successful with radio and retail.

Based in Meridian, Mississippi, Will Myles and Young People of Praise (YPOP) is a contemporary gospel choir prepared to deliver spiritually profound musical presentations to young people across the globe.

Will's passion for gospel music spearheaded a movement to direct and nurture individuals by creating a program for those with musical gifts and abilities. Area youth would gather to discuss the challenges they faced and how to cope and redirect them to a positive outcome. Their humble beginnings came into fruition by way of a community based outreach program sponsored by the local Boys and Girls Club in 1995. Through spiritual and musical fellowship, "The Boys and Girls Club Mass Choir" was born. The then 70-member choir, sang throughout their immediate area and other parts of Mississippi. Fondrea Lewis, moved as instructed when God spoke to her one early March morning, to go forward and record music. In response to this word, shortly over a year later Fondrea, released her new album entitled "I Believe God." This is her first solo project, but singing God's praises is what the powerful vocalist has been called to do from the very beginning.

From singing her first solo at the precious age of three years old to taking the lead part in the church adult choir singing, "I've already been to the water" at the age of six. Fondrea was being groomed by the Master. Over the years Fondrea Lewis amplified her gift during her years in high school gaining invaluable experience as a Gospel Chorus Directress and jazz band vocalist. As God had given her purpose, she continually groomed a choir of sixty strong enabling them to march out of the McDonald Gospel Fest in 2004 and 2005 as victors.

Presently serving as a minster of the Gospel and solo artist she is equipped to deliver music and ministry in a way that will be a blessing. "Sweeter", the new single from Fondrea Lewis will have many across various Christian genres pressing lock and repeat. The music video is "Sweet", to put it short, it will leave you humming and taping your hip to this song that is very personable.

I flipped the design of the front page in September from landscape to portrait. Instead of the left to right layout, I went back to the long version (up and down). As a child, Hip Hop artist Lecrae’s world was void of good role models. Growing up with a single mom, he would watch rap videos at his grandmother’s house and developed an ability to rap himself. Yet Lecrae wrestled with insignificance, having never met his father and enduring a life of abuse and neglect. He sought to fill this void by surrounding himself with gangsters.

So this was a rough week. Craziness all around. One bright spot was that YouTube Sensations "The Walls Group" released their debut project through their website (thewallsgroup.org). These kids have IT! Talented and anointed! The project is nice from start to finish. Produced by Levi Too King out of St. Louis, MO (you may be familiar with his work on Meaghan Williams' Bless You God project) -- this CD has a lil bit of something for everybody ([Worship]Ballads, Urban, G/CM [Gospel]/Contemporary Music lol and even a lil modern quartet) and features a guest appearance from Nikki Ross. It's a digital download for $15 -- *coughs* knock that down to $9.99 *end cough* but it IS worth it. *Adds to my top releases of 2011 pile.*

This is the Deitrick Haddon I like. His music with the Voices of Unity gets much more play than his solo stuff. Personally, I would have chosen a couple of other songs than what's listed here, but the play through of the CD was decent. Check it out!

1) Where does the concept for YRM emanate from?

It comes from a lesson via Pastor Bill Winston on renewing the mind: So a man thinketh, so he is. It's just a light lesson guarding what we hear, say and think. It's somewhat like continuation of The Law Of Confession but not as heavy. The mind is a playground and if you fill it with The Word and empowering thoughts it can be reprogrammed to accomplish. Pastor Winston says it best: "Man is the only thing that can reprogram it's own hard drive." So, get rid of your natural thinking (your rational non faith mind) and embrace "Your Righteous Mind." Science even says our right brain (righteous mind) is where creativity lies and it longs for meditation or prayer. Faith is creative. It always accomplishes what it's sent to do. Creative people tend to be more right brained. They have to go into the not seen and create something that hasn't been seen.

2) You covered Chaka Khan's 1985 classic "Through the Wire." What prompted that?

I've always loved that song and I saw value in presenting it from the place of an end time servant, one who doesn't leave when ministry gets rough, friendship gets rough or things don't go the way you feel they should. The commitment is down to the wire even through the fire. Another lesson from Bill Winston on The End Time Servant.

3) Bishop Walter Hawkins is one of your biggest musical influences. Why was it important to include a cover of one of his songs on the project?

He has such a HUGE catalog and was such an amazing writer that it was hard to choose which song to do. I created a special tribute to Bishop Hawkins for Verizon's How Sweet The Sound (national choir competition tour in 2010) and this was one of the songs I performed so I decided to cover it and place it on the CD. I also want to keep his catalog alive and this is a step towards doing that.

4) There's a song on the new CD called "I AM Factor." What is that exactly?

This is an exercise to help people decree their status. God (I AM) left his name for the generations to use. When Moses asked who shall I say sent me, God told him: "I AM." When you use the term "I AM" whatever follows "I AM" starts looking for you. The universe is programmed to respond. It also works with " I AM NOT" so we must be careful how we use the term "I AM" if you say "I AM" poor, poverty starts looking for you. which is why the scripture says let the poor say "I AM" rich This was inspired by Bishop Tudor Bismark of South Africa during our church's faith conference

5) You brought in Israel Houghton for "We Agree." What inspired that?
The song just felt like Israel and we've always planned to do something together. I'm a huge fan!

6) You dusted off a Tri-City recording "Restoring the Years." Do you feel that message is more important today than when you recorded it before?

Well, I try to write timeless songs so that no matter when a song is recorded the message resonates for someone. This is a reminder that your years of planting good have not gone un-noticed.

7) Do you ever feel pressure to top yourself after you've had #1 hits like "Back II Eden" and "The Blessing of Abraham"?

I actually don't. I've learned that a moment is just that, it can't be repeated. So I just listen to my heart and write from there. I feel God is at my heart and if I listen, Donald Lawrence will write what needs to be said at that time. Trying to out do or repeat yourself will cause you to become contrived. I never like that feeling!

8) You don't simply evangelize in your music. You seem to offer everyday advice and practical life lessons.
I think it's Music Therapy but word and faith based. Practical info for everyday life but based on Word and faith!

9) We've heard of the people who influenced you at the beginning of your career. Who, if anyone, do you listen to from the new generation of performers (mainstream or gospel)?

Ne-Yo is a wonderful songwriter as are my little niece Kierra Sheard and nephew J. Drew Sheard (kids of Karen Clark Sheard). I'm amazed at how fast their talents developed. Kierra is an awesome artist/singer/songwriter and J Drew is an incredible producer.

10) What does the future hold for Donald Lawrence? What territory have you not conquered that you want to venture into next?

I want to pursue TV and later possibly film in some capacity. Also get back to theater and open some community wellness centers in Chicago helping people to balance and get back to life "and that life more abundantly" to quote John 10:10. I'd like to close by saying my favorite song on this CD is " Not Making Sense, Making Faith. It too was inspired by Bill Winston. Faith lives beyond our natural senses. You can't feel it (substance of things hoped for). You can't see it (the evidence of things not seen). You just have to KNOW you have it. So when challenged regarding your healing, dream or idea, When you are told you don't have the skills, the capital, the connections or even that there's no cure, You tell them: "For the rest of my life I'm not making Sense I'm making Faith. Don't know how I'm gonna get there but I trust the author and finisher of my faith!"

As the first feature project from Tyscot Music & Entertainment's newest division, Tyscot Films, Blessed & Cursed was originally released as a straight-to-DVD title. Despite not having a major theatrical release, the film has continued to gain grassroots appeal across the country.

"Blessed & Cursed" depicts the biblical struggle of Saul and David with a modern day twist. The Walls Group is made up of four of eight children, born to Roger and Alicia Walls. Being the children of two musicians, these kids could not escape the inevitable. Music has resounded within the walls of the Walls household for years. The Walls' love spending time with their granny, Bayonne Moody. They love listening to Kim Burrell, Kiki Sheard, The Soul Seekers, Mary Mary, and they love Dorinda Clark- Cole. They are just an ordinary bunch of kids, living a pretty ordinary life, aspiring to do extra-ordinary things in the future.

Ahjah Walls

Ahjah Walls is the baby of the group, but not the baby of the family. She is 13 years old, but says she feels so much older. Ahjah started off a little differently than the others. Ahjah loved songs and singing. The difference was her vibrato was a little faster than everyone else's and she couldn't quite get her part and hold it. This did not seem to bother Ahjah, though, as she had so many other things she liked to do. Once, while at a program in the country, instead of singing, Ahjah asked if she could do gymnastics instead. She has since then developed into an awesome alto and loves to sing more than doing gymnastics. Ahjah has the riffs and the runs like her older brother and can emulate just about any artist. Ahjah has so many gifts. She spends her time listening to music, singing, and drawing. She will one day be a famous cartoonist.

Alic (Paco) Walls

Alic (Paco) Walls, 15 years old, is next in the line. Alic is known for his raspy, soulful sound. He is compared to his mother with the raspy, hoarse tone. Paco is very laid back and doesn't show a lot of excitement. At about the age of 7 months, his parents noticed him riding in his car seat, tapping his foot to a song playing over the car radio. It was then that they knew that this fever was catching in the Walls family. Paco soon joined his brother and sister as the alto of the group. Paco could win the attention of any crowd with his charm and his peculiar voice. At the age of 13, Paco struggled with the affects of puberty and tries to adjust to his voice changing. He manages to do a little tenor, because alto is not an option anymore. Paco declares that God spoke to him in a dream and called him by his name and told him that he would pastor a mega-church one day. To God be the Glory.

Rhea Walls

Rhea Walls is 16 years old and is the second oldest of the group. Rhea is very shy, but an awesome soprano. Darrel started out alone, but was soon joined by his younger sibling. Rhea could match pitch before she could talk. She loves music and sings all the time. She is inspired by her older brother and often times gives 200% when prompted by him. She has an exceptional ear for music and plays piano and clarinet. Rhea is an outstanding athlete. She runs track and was one place away from going to the Junior Olympics this past Summer for the Carl Lewis Track Club – CL Stars. Her goal is to take home the gold this year and she has started off #1 all the way since the school season began. At the end of the school track year, with 25 schools in Fort Bend County School District, she won the district championship title in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 hundred meter hurdles for 2009-2010. Rhea aspires to be a dentist when she grows up.

Darrel McGlothen Walls

Darrel McGlothen Walls is 20 years old and is the eldest member of the Walls Family Singers, formerly the Walls Kidz. At a very early age Darrel demonstrated very unique musical abilities. While at Grace Memorial C.O.G.I.C., a young girl taught him to play the tambourine at the age of 1 1/2 years old. Everywhere he went he had to have a tambourine and everyone knew it. At the age of 3, a pastor friend stood him on the Remembrance table and he sang his very first solo, Somebody's Knocking At Your Door. That was the start of something big. Darrel was a soprano until the age of 13. He started playing drums at the age of 4 and did so until he replaced them with the organ/keyboard. He is an exceptional young man and has blessed many people with his gifts all across the United States. Darrel spends most of his time writing, recording, and singing music. It is his passion for God that causes him to be an exceptional individual. He aspires to someday be a great producer.

Delois Barret Campbell of the legendary gospel trio The Barrett Sisters passed away today. She was 85 years old.

For over thirty years, DeLois Barrett Campbell, Billie Barrett GreenBey and Rodessa Barrett Porter, internationally known as The Barrett Sisters, have lifted their voices to Praise the Lord!

Called "The Sweet Sisters of Zion" by many because of their special vocal blend, these internationally known gospel singers are natives of Chicago, Illinois. As children during the thirties, they were coached by their aunt, Mattie Dacus, and began singing with a cousin. raised by religious parents, they, along with their seven other siblings, were not allowed to listen to the popular blues of the day but it is evident that they heard it somewhere as it forms an underlying current throughout their work.

Their young lives effected by the tragedy of the depression and marred by the results of poverty and sickness (they lost several siblings to the then prevalent tuberculosis), they had no dreams other than that of survival. Like many of their contemporaries, they thought that the only hope musical talent might have would be in the secular world. But they knew that this would deeply hurt their parents as the older Barretts truly believed that worldly music had no place in the lives of the saved.

While still in high school, DeLois, the eldest of the three girls, began singing with the world famous Roberta Martin Singers, emerging as one of the nation's greatest soloists. When her friend, the great Dinah Washington, suggested that she forsake gospel and pursue the blues as she had done, DeLois was truly tempted. But after much consideration and prayer, she soon realized that the blues wasn't what God had in mind for her. But she wished her friend much success and was deeply saddened when Dinah didn't live long enough to enjoy her own accomplishments.

Her work with the Roberta Martin Singers, although not a lucrative endeavor, took her around the country and introduced her to the world. But this too soon came to a halt when she married and started raising a family. Her work would now be relegated to her home and to being a pastor's wife.

Meanwhile, her sisters were busy studying their craft and pursuing family life as well. By then, Billie had now become a soloist in her own right and Rodessa was writing music and directing a choir in Gary, Indiana. In the mid-sixties, the sisters regrouped and, with the help of Roberta Martin and countless others, went on to record their first album on the Savoy label, "Jesus Loves Me." Since that time, The Barrett Sisters have become one of the world's leading female gospel groups and one of the oldest groups to still travel and perform.

Throughout their career, The Barrett Sisters have been associated with celebrities and big names in entertainment. In the 1940's, the joined the Thomas Dorsey National Singers Convention. Since then, The Barrett Sisters have appeared with numerous stars including the late Rev. James Cleveland, Andre Crouch, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Shirley Caesar, The Winans and Patti LaBelle.

The Barrett Sisters have performed at countless churches and in may prestigious concert halls including the Lincoln Center in New York City; Constitution Hall in Washington, DC; Orchestra Hall in Chicago; and Theatre DeVille in Paris. In 1983, they represented the United States as Goodwill Ambassadors to Africa and in 1987, they spent six weeks representing the country in the South Pacific. They have performed for several dignitaries including the King of Sweden and the President of Zaire, Africa. As of 1995, they had toured internationally more than thirty times.

In addition to their paid performances, they have also done countless benefits for many organizations, among them the National Council of Negro Women. They have also made a special effort to use their talent to help young people who have aspirations in the music field. In tandem with this, they regularly contribute to the United Negro Fund.

All of the sisters are active in their local churches and in the community. They make a special point of using their celebrity status to encourage their neighbors, friends and fans to make use of their right to vote.

In the 1960's, they began appearing on radio and television shows nationwide. Among their many appearances, they have been guests on "The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show." They've been featured many times on the locally produced Emmy award winning "Jubilee Showcase" and have also appeared on "The Stellar Awards"; "Bobby Jones Show"; "Living the Dream"; a television tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King; and the "PTL Club." In 1982, the Barrett Sisters were featured in the critically acclaimed documentary "Say Amen, Somebody" and in 1990, they were selected to appear in the PBS special "Going Home to Gospel with Patti LaBelle." Last January, they, along with countess other gospel legends, participated in a video wonder produced by Ed Smith and Bill Gaither entitled "On My Way to Heaven." Long time recording artists, The Barrett Sisters most recent release is on I AM Records and is entitled "What A Wonderful World." They are scheduled to record a new album this summer on the Brentwood label.

Because of their ongoing contribution to gospel music, The Barrett Sisters were invited to perform and participate in the Black Music Seminar at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, wherein they were the only gospel group to do so. Still active on the gospel music scene, The Barrett Sisters continue to travel the world over. They are currently writing a book about their years as gospel music artists.

We Remember: Bishop F.C. Barnes

Gospel Icon, Bishop F.C. Barnes passed away early this morning, July 11, 2011 at approximately 2:30am. He was 82.

Bishop Barnes began singing in quartets when he was 14 years old. He would later record eight albums with Rev. Janice Brown and "Rough Side of the Mountain" became the most popular album remaining #1 on the gospel charts for more than a year, selling over 500,000 copies. Bishop Barnes spent his entire recording career on Atlanta International Records, (Air Gospel) a subsidiary of The Malaco Music Group. He recorded 15 albums, not including appearances on several LP's with his son, Gospel Legend Luther Barnes and the widely successful direct marketing campaign infomercial entitled, Gospel Legends.

Bishop Barnes has received numerous Stellar Award nominations as well as a Dove Award nomination. In 2010, Bishop Barnes & Company received a Stellar Award nomination for their latest CD "The Old Time Way." On this CD, he recorded his first collaboration since Rev. Janice Brown with Darrell Luster on the single, "God Is God" (He Won't Change) which received considerable airplay and garnered an appearance on BET's Bobby Jones Gospel.

New Music: Maurice Griffin - I Am Somebody - 07.05.11

New crop of young artists are making noise and names in gospel music. This particular seed is a dynamic worship leader Maurice Griffin. This 24 year old rising star will debut his group CD 'I Am Somebody: I Peter 2:9' through his own independent label MGM Chicago Music Group.

Griffin wrote and produced all eleven of the songs on this heart-felt praise and worship project. Griffin calls his style "Urban Praise/Inspirational." Among the standouts is the anthem "Praise Offering" and the reverential "Rain on Me." However, the song that stands out for Griffin is "Pour Out Your Spirit." Griffin says, "There's a line that states, ..For me to live is Christ.' That means a lot to me because Christ is the only answer to all of our problems."

The church has always been integral to Griffin's life. He was born May 19, 1986 inHampton, VA. The middle of three sons, Griffin's father works for a steel plant andhis mother is a social worker. After relocating to Kankakee, IL, Griffin was just five years old when he first directed a choir and realized that he could sing at the Fair Haven Church of God in Christ (COGIC). "I received my calling [to sing] when washing dishes one night and Daryl Coley's ..He's Preparing Me,' started to play," Griffin recalls. "And the Holy Spirit told me, ..it's time,' and I said, ..Yes Lord,' and just began to worship God for the journey he was about to take me through." Now residing in Chicago, IL, and a member of Giant Steps Christian Center where Sean McMillan is Pastor, Griffin's goal is to serve and empower other worship leaders to their maximum potential.

Griffin's musical influences were diverse. "I like Michael Jackson for his abilities as an all around entertainer," he adds. "I like Whitney Houston for her stage presence, and I love Daryl Coley for his powerful anointed gift in singing and ministering. You put those three together and you have, Maurice Griffin."

While a student at Kankakee High School, age 15, Griffin joined the professional youth choir, New Direction. Throughout his 10 year career with the New Direction, He became one of the urban choir's primary soloists on songs such as "Hold On, Two Wings, and Holy." He's also toured with gospel artist VaShawn Mitchell, served as a primary background session singer for Bobby Jones' "Next Generation" tapings for the Gospel Music Channel and sung background on Dorinda Clark Cole's "The Rose of Gospel" CD that featured the smash hit, "So Many Times."

Griffin was featured on Bobby Jones Artist Retreat Reunion live in Las Vegas, NV by songwriter V. Michael McKay, who wrote 'The Battle is the Lords', one of thevpremier songs that put Yolanda Adams on the charts. Griffin has won many competitions such as the GMWA Gospel Treasure, Dorinda Clark Cole's Singers and Musicians 'Best Male Vocalist' of the Year, and recently seen as a finalist on 2009 BET Sunday's Best.

For the new CD I Am Somebody: I Peter 2:9, Griffin says the message is clear and direct. "The message is telling everybody that you are somebody in Christ," he says. "Everybody is somebody and through Christ, our dreams can and will materialize."

New Music: Timothy Wright Memorial Choir - The Legacy Continues

In the Fall of 1993, Rev. Timothy Wright had a vision to bring together all of New York's Gospel choirs and form one mass choir comprising of over 500 voices for a one night only musical recording. That vision resulted in The New York Fellowship Mass Choir CD which featured the title smash single "Come Thou Almighty King", which was nominated for a Grammy award in 1994.

In January of 2003, Rev. Wright reunited The NY Fellowship Mass Choir after 10 years. The sold out event took place at the 2,500 seat sanctuary of The Greater Allen A.M.E. Cathedral in Queens, NY on April 28, 2003 resulting in the Grammy and Stellar Award nominated "Live in New York" featuring the timeless hit "For the Rest of My Life". In 2005, Rev. Wright and the choir recorded their 2nd offering "Let's Celebrate: He is Risen" featuring the title track. Wright and the choir returned in 2007 to release their Grammy and numerous Stellar Award nominated CD "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus" which was the final project before the car accident that took the life of Wright's wife, Co-Pastor Betty Wright and grandson Daniel "D.J." Wright, and left Rev. Wright with numerous injuries that ultimately led to his passing.

After the death of Rev. Wright, his son, David Wright not only took over as Pastor of the church that his father and mother co-pastored, but also took over the helm as the leader of the choir after it was unanimously decided that they could not let the legacy of "The Godfather of Gospel Music" end. Thus, The Timothy Wright Memorial Choir was formed comprised of some of the members of The New York Fellowship Choir and the original Timothy Wright Concert Choir. This aggregation of anointed and professional singers and musicians are determined to continue the spiritual and musical excellence of Rev. Timothy Wright, while keeping the integrity of his music and his memory alive for many generations to come. The choir recorded their first music project since the death of Rev. Timothy Wright in June of 2010. The new CD is titled "Pastor David Wright presents: The Timothy Wright Memorial Choir....The Legacy Continues" and features the smash single "God Has Been So Good". Upon the release of the new cd the choir will embark on a nationwide tour promoting the project, and letting people know that the spirit and rich musical heritage of Rev. Timothy Wright lives on.

Tasha Cobbs is proving herself to be more than just "the next big voice" in gospel. Yes, her voice is amazing but after listening to the songs on her solo project, you will quickly learn, this chick is a triple threat! A prolific songwriter, a true singer's singer (think a little bit of Kelly Price, Kari Jobe and Jasmine Sullivan) and she's an incredible preacher. After hearing only a few moments of her singing, you understand she has power, can deliver a might and smooth alto AND will smash you to pieces.

Creative as a little girl, this PK was born the only daughter to Bishop Fritz and Lady Bertha Cobbs. Raised in Jessup, GA, Tasha passed the time singing with her first cousins who are all incredible minstrels as well.

One would be surprised to learn she was bit of a tomboy in her formative years. She initially possessed little desire to do the whole "girlie thing," so it's no surprise that it wasn't until high school that she began to express her gift of being a "fashionista". One look at her stylish creations and you'll definitely be sold on her clothing line which is soon to come.

In 2006, as fate would have it, she heard the voice of God telling her to relocate to Atlanta. Her father came to her with a confirming word and within hours, she loaded her belongings and began her journey to pursue destiny. She attended service at the dReam Center church of Atlanta and was assured that it was where God desired for her to be. Without hesitation, she approached the altar becoming the first official partner of the ministry.

Within months, she connected with her Pastor, William H. Murphy, III and became one of his background vocalist. Under his guidance and care she has grown to higher heights in prayer, worship and leadership. She's also been blessed to record with Murphy and many other artists as a lead and background vocalist.

Tasha is currently completing her undergraduate studies at Beulah Heights University. As her gift continues to make room for her and place her before great men, Tasha prays daily that God would "keep me humbled at your feet and never take your anointing away." She's extremely proud that she's a submitted daughter to Pastors William and Danielle Murphy who have entrusted her to be the Worship Pastor at the dReam Center church of Atlanta.

Brighter days are ahead with the release of her first solo project, "Smile."

SMILE was recorded in Atlanta before a crowd of 2000. The eleven track CD features the title track SMILE that has been blessing worshippers for more than a year now. "I was inspired to write the song in a Ministry of Worship class at the Full Gospel Conference in 2007. The instructor, Elder Phillip Britton, was telling a story about an experience he had shared with his daughter that put a SMILE on his face." Tasha wrote the song and sang it the following week at her home church, where it soon became an anthem.

"Happy", the first single, was inspired by a conversation with her younger cousin questioning the sincerity of one's happiness. After that conversation, Tasha sat down and penned the lyrics, "Everything about you is right...it covers all my wrong. Your life saved my life. With you is where I belong." This compilation of songs are written with a simplicity that even the youngest worshipper can appreciate, yet with a profoundness that helps place you right in the face of God.

The Michigan native has what can only be described as a voice to heal the soul. His smooth timbre and rich milky falsetto resonate even after the music stops. It seemed like just yesterday Tim Bowman, Jr. wowed the industry singing alongside gospel sensation, Vickie Winans.

At just 12 years old, Bowman used his precocious talent to melodically scat -reminiscent of jazz legend, Ella Fitzgerald -on the hit single Shake Yourself Loose Remix. We heard him again on Winans' gospel hit song, How I Got Over.

Since then, the now 23 year old has traveled the country singing with his famous aunt and also singing with his father, Smooth Jazz veteran, Tim Bowman. There's no question that music is ubiquitous to the young artist's makeup.

Now, Tim Bowman, Jr. has taken the reigns and after many years of sitting under some of the best in the business, he's ready to release his debut album.

Finally, Bowman is giving his take on the subject. The highly anticipated album is dedicated to his first love, Jesus Christ; highlighting the healing power and pure love that comes from his relationship with God. All his experiences and opportunities have helped mold Bowman as an artist.

"I've recorded an album intended to evoke genuine human emotion and enlighten the world on the love of Christ." Bowman says, "Nice beats are cool. New sounds are hot. Winans' new weekly variety and magazine program, “The Vickie Winans Show," is in development and scheduled for an autumn premiere

“I am sooooooo excited," Winans beams. “Somebody is finally giving me the opportunity to do the show I've been carrying around in my heart for years. We're going to have a little bit of everything: fashion tips, cooking segments, children's segments, celebrity interviews, musical performances, comedians. You name it and we're going to have it."

The self-managed artist is also a successful businesswoman who owns a jewelry store and wig shop, Accents by Vickie Winans. Winans burst on the gospel music scene in 1985 with her signature smash “We Shall Behold Him." She's remained one of gospel music's Top 10 artists with appearances on NBC Today and Oprah. She has appeared on the cover of Jet magazine, served as celebrity spokesperson for Daimler-Chrysler and Quaker Oats. Other hits include #1 songs “As Long As I Got King Jesus", “Shake Yourself Loose" and “How I Got Over."

Multiple Stellar Award, Maurette Brown Clark, is one of Gospel music's sweethearts. Originally from Long Island, New York, Maurette began her singing career with her family group. Throughout her formative years, she continued singing wih choirs and groups, as well as studying classical piano.

Maurette's first CD, How I Feel, was released in 1998 on Verity Records. This CD featured the radio friendly, "Breaking of Day" and earned her the Stellar Award for Best New Artist in 2000.

Her second CD, By His Grace, was released in 2002 on AIR Records, and featured her popular rendition of the praise and worship anthem, "I Just Want To Praise You." This CD, as well, received a Gospel Music Worship of America Gospel Excellence Award and two Stellar Award nominations. She was also nominated for a Dove Award for her paticipation in a remake of the Donnie McClurkin classic, "Stand," featuring Marvin Sapp, Daryl Coley, and Helen Baylor.

Maurette's third CD entitled The Dream, was released on AIR/Malaco Records in March 2007, and features the praise and worship anthem, "One God", as well as the classic "It Ain't Over (Until God Say It's Over)". She was awarded the 2008 Stellar Award for Praise and Worship CD of the Year and her daughter Jada received the 2008 Stellar Award for Children's Performance of the Year.

Maurette's videos, including the video for "It Ain't Over", can be seen on GMC, the WORD Network, BET, Centric, and other various gospel programs.

Currently, she is preparing for the release of her fourth solo project, entitled The Sound of Victory, on AIR/Malaco, which was recorded live in Norfolk, Virginia. The first single is entitled "I Hear The Sound of Victory" and is available on iTunes. She is excited about this phase in her music ministry and is looking forward to what God has for her.

She happily mantains her status as a member of Richard Smallwood's choir, Vision.

This singer/songwriter/producer/musician/wife and mom knows that with God, nothing is impossible and her life and music are a testimony to that fact.
